Am I really making myself more complicating than I really am?

The saying that people don't show their true self in order to protect ourselves can easily be rebutted by a simple if you can't accept yourself who can? I ponder on this answer that hit me and wondered if what I kept so deeply in me had such a simple answer. Everything became so clear but what I realized is, I'm actually caught in between. Should I let go of that skeptical past that I hold? Or am I really not accepting myself for who I am and am so afraid to be hurt by their critism that i would be so vulnerable once others saw who I really am.
